Piccadilly Gardens Team Helps Nab Suspected E-Bike Thief... Even While Off Duty!

The saying goes that being a police officer is not just a job, it's a way of life. That was certainly true this evening when an off-duty officer found himself stepping straight back into policing while enjoying a well-earned rest day in Manchester city centre.

At around 7.25pm, whilst out for a meal with a friend, the officer spotted a male using bolt cutters to remove the lock from a secured e-bike. Moments later, the male jumped onto the bike and attempted to make off.

Not willing to let the bike disappear into the city centre, the off-duty officer sprang into action, shouting "Police, stop where you are!" before running after the suspects. The male was swiftly detained after being pulled away from the bike and restrained on the ground.

Without any handcuffs available, the officer, assisted by his friend, safely held the suspect while waiting for on-duty colleagues to arrive. Despite a barrage of swearing and verbal abuse, the pair remained calm and professional throughout, keeping the suspect secure.

A call to 999 quickly brought reinforcements, and this is where PC Simm and SC Evans entered the story.

Responding promptly to assist their off-duty colleague, the pair took over responsibility for the detained suspect, helping ensure the arrest was dealt with safely and efficiently before escorting him to a detention van.

It's a great example of teamwork, quick thinking and proactive policing. An off-duty officer's vigilance prevented a suspected theft, while PC Simm and SC Evans’ swift response ensured the situation was brought to a safe conclusion.

A reminder to would-be bike thieves in Manchester: whether officers are on duty or off duty, there is always someone watching!
